I photographed USAFA Before Dawn moments after USAFA Chapel at Night and USAFA at Twilight. As the sky lightened, it turned dramatically blue. If you look at USAFA Chapel at Night and USAFA at Twilight a night gray dominated the photos, but at the moment USAFA Before Dawn was shot, the sky turned midnight blue. This was all without any filter except for a UV filter.
The blue is what really makes this photo. But it is very fleeting. within moments the blue was gone and I was chasing lighting with different exposure times. I shot USAFA Chapel at Night, USAFA at Twilight and USAFA Before Dawn with 30 second exposure times. But that soon got to be too long and I was quickly down to 5 second exposure times and from there rapidly down to 1 second or less.
ISO 100, f/8, 30 second exposure, focal length 62mm.

Wow, that blue is quite stunning...I thought it was some type of trick photography or something at first until I read you notes on the photo. So, it really looked that blue? That's really cool.

Yep, it is that blue. I guess it has something to do with the blue sky. At this point in the morning the upper atmosphere is getting light, but not the ground so light reflects off the upper atmosphere onto the ground, turning the whole place blue.
